I am really glad to see the implementation of the USB-C connector into the newest Surface products, but to use it for charging purposes just defeats the inherent safety that's built into the multiple use/charging connector.

Most of the time, when you want to recharge your Surface device, you are going to appreciate the ease at which you can plug the Surface Dock in, and be rest assured that your connection will be protected by this proprietary multiple use/charging connector. One of the best things about the Surface Dock is the ability to protected the connector while charging with this proprietary connector. I don't see why anyone would want to bypass the excellent connector that the Surface provides by using a connector that doesn't protect the device by quickly disconnecting when stressed. There are very few Surface devices that are equipped to use the USB-C connection, so my original post was to cover the 90% of Surface devices that do not have that connector.
