I am really glad to see the implementation of the USB-C connector into the newest Surface products, but to use it for charging purposes just defeats the inherent safety that's built into the multiple use/charging connector.
Most of the time, when you want to recharge your Surface device, you are going to appreciate the ease at which you can plug the Surface Dock in, and be rest assured that your connection will be protected by this proprietary multiple use/charging connector. The USB-C connector is an excellent multi use/data transmission connector, to be sure. I guess you could use the workaround by charging a battery brick, and plug that into the USB-C connector, but that is not always a viable alternative.
There are benefits to having this immediate disconnect of the multiple use/charging cable that the Surface Dock provides, and using the USB-C connection to charge the device isn't an "Upgrade". I understand the benefits of the USB-C connector, but to bypass the excellent Surface multiple use/charging connector just to use the USB-C connector for charging is going backwards as far as safety is concerned. One of the best things I've found on the Surface line of products is the "Forgiving" connection that the Surface units have has since day 1. I have found that the proprietary connector has saved my Surface Pro's more than just a couple of times in circumstances where the wire was forced to disconnect by having tripped on the wire, or having the device fall, to have the immediate disconnection without damage to the connector.Īre you trying to recharge the battery using the USB Type C connection? Seeing as you have now told us that you are trying to hook up to a S元, the question remains on what someone would need to use the USB C connection to charge the device, just to have it get yanked out of the S元 when it gets tightened by force. One of the best things about the Surface Dock is the ability to protected the connector while charging with this proprietary connector. I don't see why anyone would want to bypass the excellent connector that the Surface provides by using a connector that doesn't protect the device by quickly disconnecting when stressed. There are very few Surface devices that are equipped to use the USB-C connection, so my original post was to cover the 90% of Surface devices that do not have that connector. I figured that there would be some discussion on the USB Type C connector.
